✋ My Visit to Parksley, Virginia After the strange, albeit enchanting evening gathering at the Anna State Hospital Cemetery I went back to my hotel in downtown Anna, Illinois to rest up for my trip to my Dad’s house in Virginia. When I told Nurse Penny at the closing of the ceremony that I was headed to the Eastern Shore of Virginia, she retorted with a chuckle, “I didn’t know it had a Western Shore?”, with a bit of geographic arrogance. I had to explain to her about both shores, Penny is not alone, most don’t realize that Virginia has two, one west of the Chesapeake Bay called the Western Shore, and the oft forgotten / forsaken Eastern Shore which is a peninsula bounded by the Atlantic on the east and the Bay on the west. The Virginia portion of this peninsula consists of two counties, the more sparsely populated Northhampton county (12,000/212 sq miles) on the southern half, and the denser (33,000/450 sq miles) Accomack County on the northern half.
