My Visit to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan
January 31, 2017 I turn on the hotel TV here in Mackinaw City, and the HBO series of "Big Love" is playing, reminding me of The Mormon town of Lamoni on the Iowa/Missouri border, a town that has always held a fascination for me, for so many reasons. One, it is a Mormon town in Iowa. Two, it has a little Mormon college in it called Graceland College. Three, I have known an inordinate number of non-Mormon people who lived and went to college here, four, it is in Iowa and not Utah and finally I envision it as a great setting for Big Love, Bill, Roland, Chloe, and Jeannie. Remember the scene where all of Roland’s eighty year old wives are beating the daylights out of Bill in Roland’s house. Hilarious, but scary. For these reasons and others I had decided back in September to stop there on my way back from visiting my friend John Quimby in Kansas City.
